Winter 2002 AAAP News Column

A substantial number of international members and non-members attended the AAAP’s 12th Annual Meeting and Symposium in Amelia Island to participate in different events geared toward international members. One such event was a workshop on international practices and perspectives in addiction psychiatry. Among the topics discussed were the need for standard terminology and sharing of meaningful research information, the Mexican experience in the management of initial cocaine withdrawal and agitation with zuclopenthixol and the Canadian policy on medicinal marijuana and its implications for psychiatric practice.

In addition, attendees from outside the United States had an opportunity to network during the Area IX luncheon and a special Lunch with the Experts on international issues. Topics of importance and interest to AAAP members around the world were discussed including varying perspectives from Europe, Australia, Central and South America on addiction treatment, means to facilitate increased international membership activity in the Academy, issues around dues and meeting costs and the use of e-mail to keep in more frequent contact with one another. Another highlight of the meeting was the creation of an International Member-at-Large position that will have direct access to the Board of Directors to further enhance the role of the international membership. International members should send comments that they would want directed to the Board to david.crockford@crha-health.ab.ca.
