Multidimensional Care of Chronic Pain: Reducing Reliance on Opioids for Relief

Prescribers’ Clinical Support System for Opioid Therapies (PCSS-O) is a three year grant funded by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA),Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT). It is a collaborative project led by American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry (AAAP) with: American Dental Association (ADA), American Medical Association (AMA), American Osteopathic Academy of Addiction Medicine (AOAAM), American Psychiatric Association (APA), American Society for Pain Management Nursing (ASPMN), and International Nurses Society on Addictions (IntNSA). These organizations are providing training and education on the safe and effective prescribing of opioid medications in the treatment of pain and/or opioid addiction.                      

Webinar Information:

This webinar will explore a multidimensional clinical approach to the treatment of chronic pain (and co-occurring mental health and substance disorders) that can be implemented in both primary and specialty practices.  Readily available evidence-based options for active patient engagement in chronic pain treatment will be explored and tips on identifying clinical and support resources in community based settings will be offered.  The appropriate role of opioid analgesics in the context of active pain recovery also will be reviewed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the chronic disease model of pain and the role of self-management in effective treatment.
  • Be able to guide patients with complex chronic pain into an active role in pain recovery.
  • Appropriately integrate opioids when needed into a multidimensional treatment plan
