The American Journal on Addictions INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS The American Journal on Addictions is the official journal of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. Published six times a year, each issue covers a wide variety of topics ranging from codependence to genetics, epidemiology to dual diagnosis, etiology to neuroscience, and much more. Features of the journal, all written by experts in the field, include special overview articles, clinical or basic research papers, clinical updates, and book reviews within the area of addictions. Submission of material is understood to imply that it or substantial parts of it have not been published, accepted for publication or submitted for consideration elsewhere. Upon acceptance of an article, the author(s) will be required to assign copyright ownership in writing to the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. Submission Procedure. Submit original and two copies along with a computer diskette version using MS Word or WordPerfect to Sheldon I. Miller, M.D., Editor, The American Journal on Addictions, at the following address: PO Box 473, Colmar, PA 18915. A cover letter must be included indicating that the material is intended for publication and specifying for which section of the journal it is to be considered (Special or Regular Articles, Book Reviews, Clinical Updates or Letters to the Editor). Articles of eight to 10 pages, including references, are preferred. Books to be considered for review should be sent to Roger D. Weiss, M.D., Associate Editor for Book Reviews, The American Journal on Addictions, at the address above. Anyone wishing to review books for the Journal should apply to Dr. Weiss at the same address or visit the Academy’s Web site: https://aaap.org/journal/bookreviewers.html. All accepted manuscripts, artwork and photographs become the property of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry. Upon acceptance, contributors are required to supply the final version of the material both in hard copy and on computer diskette. A PC-based format using MS Word or WordPerfect is preferred. Questions about submitting material electronically can be directed to the publisher. Additional information on how to prepare a manuscript and an author template may be obtained from the journal’s Web page on the publisher’s Web site: http://www.taylorandfrancis.com. Peer Review. All manuscripts, including those written at the invitation of the Editor, are subject to peer review by at least two experts. Upon completion of the review (usually a 10-week process), the Author(s) will be advised of the decision on the manuscript. If revisions are deemed necessary, this feedback will be based on and detailed from the reviews. Revised material is due in a timely fashion to avoid the necessity of returning to the peer review stage. At the discretion of the Editor, reviewer comments will be included with the return of rejected manuscripts. Please note that all reviews remain anonymous. Persons interested in becoming reviewers for the Journal may submit a form at the Academy’s Web site: https://aaap.org/journal/reviewers.html. PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS Manuscripts, including tables, figures and references should be prepared in accordance with the American Medical Association Manual of Style, Ninth Edition. All manuscripts must be typed double-spaced on 8.5" x 11" paper with a 1" margin all around. Submissions not conforming to these requirements will be returned unreviewed. Title Page. The opening page should contain the article title, names, academic degrees and institutional affiliations of all authors and complete mailing address (valid for the next 12 months), phone, fax and e-mail of the author to whom all correspondence should be sent. Abstract. The abstract should be typed on a separate page and should not exceed 100 words. Key Words. Author(s) should provide 3-4 key words for use in listing article in the subject index published annually in the fall issue. Illustrations. Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be clean originals or digital files. Digital files are recommended for highest quality reproduction and should follow these guidelines: 300 dpi or higher; sized to fit on journal page; EPS, TIFF or PSD format only; submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files. Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first figure is $1200. Subsequent figures, totaling no more than four text pages, are $500 each. Good quality color prints should be provided in their final size. Figures needing reduction or enlargement will be charged an additional 25 percent. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of any artwork deemed unacceptable. Tables and Figures. Tables and figures should not be embedded in the text, but should be included as separate sheets or files. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend and any footnotes suitably identified below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled, taking into account necessary size reduction. Captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet. All original figures should be clearly marked in pencil on the reverse side with the number, author’s name, and top edge indicated. References. References should be listed on separate pages following the text and should be typed double-spaced. References are numbered and listed in the order of appearance in the text; the appropriate reference number in parentheses follows the text citation. Do not arrange the reference list alphabetically. Be sure all references have been cited in the text. List all authors in the reference list unless there are more than six, in which case the names of the first three are used, followed by "et al." Journal names should be abbreviated as they appear in Index Medicus; journals not currently indexed there should not be abbreviated. Authors should follow the guidelines in the American Medical Association Manual of Style, Ninth Edition. Proofs. One set of page proofs is sent to the designated author. Proofs should be checked and returned within 48 hours. Offprints and Complimentary Copies. The corresponding author of each article will receive 25 free reprints of the article. Additional reprints of the article may be ordered from Informa Healthcare by using the order form included with page proofs. Permissions. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources. Revised 02-07
