The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry's (AAAP) 20th Annual Meeting and Symposium was held at the Boca Raton Resort & Club, in Boca Raton, Florida, December 2-5, 2010. The conference provided physicians and allied health professionals who treat patients with substance use and mental health disorders the latest scientific developments in addiction psychiatry and addiction medicine. The meeting is structured to encourage interaction among clinicians from multiple disciplines, schools of thought, and settings. Meeting events include symposia, workshops, poster sessions showcasing new research in the field, Breakfast for Trainees, Lunch with the Experts, and a Case Conference with expert discussion.

The 21st Annual Meeting & Symposium began on the afternoon of Thursday, December 2, 2010 and adjourned around noon on Sunday, December 5, 2010. The conference schedule also included a wide range of new research presentations, small-group workshops, and networking opportunities.

2010 Conference CME Information

Jointly sponsored by the Medical University of South Carolina and the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry

AAAP 21st Annual Meeting and Symposium Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this conference participants should be able to:

1. Obtain knowledge on the relationship of personality disorders to drug and nicotine disorders, including their influence on natural history outcomes
2. Identify the potential mechanisms of how co-occurring psychiatric disorders influence addictive disorders (and vice versa) including how the lack of inclusion of co-occurring conditions may reduce the generalizability of clinical research
3. Identify the clinically-relevant pharmacological characteristics of buprenorphine
4. Identify and incorporate specific resources to establish office-based treatment with buprenorphine for patients with opioid dependence
5. Apply criteria for establishing the diagnosis of opioid dependence
6. Identify types of research findings that might be used to individualize care

The following symposia included in the Annual Meeting will emphasize identification and management of pain in patients related to drug and alcohol use disorders and complications: Symposium I, Symposium II, and Symposium IV.
