Abstracts
The American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry
is accepting abstract submissions for workshops, poster
and paper presentations for the 18th Annual Meeting and
Symposium. Submissions by and about racial and ethnic
minorities and women, as well as other underrepresented
groups, are strongly encouraged.
The following guidelines apply for submission
of proposals for workshops, posters and paper presentations.
SUBMISSION CATEGORIES
Paper Presentations offer an opportunity to briefly present
research findings or data on clinical
experiences. These presentations are clustered into concurrent
90-minute sessions with each
abstract presentation 10 minutes in length followed by
an additional 5 minute question/answer
period.
Posters are displayed during the opening reception and
throughout the second day of the conference
with the attendant author(s) hosting informal sessions
about their work.
Workshops allow for interactive learning around a specific
topic. The emphasis will be on skills
development and small group discussion as opposed to
dissemination of information in a lecture
format.
ABSTRACT GUIDELINES
Read all information carefully. Abstracts that do not
comply with these instructions will not be
accepted for review.
• E-mail submissions must be sent as a Word document
attachment, typed in 12-point font,
single-spaced with 1" margins. No tables, figures
or images may be included in the abstract.
• The title must not exceed 15 words and should
appear in all capital letters. Excluding the title
and author information, submissions are limited to a
maximum of 250 words.
• Author information should appear in upper and
lower case. State the authors' names (last
name preceding first name or initials), and degrees,
institutional affiliation, city, and state.
• Begin the body of the abstract on a new line.
Abbreviations within the body should
be kept to a minimum and must be defined upon first use
in the abstract by placing
the abbreviation in parentheses after the represented
full word or phrase. The
abstract should not contain references or credits.
SUBMISSIONS MUST CONFORM TO THE FOLLOWING PRESENTATION
FORMATS
• Scientific Research: Submissions must contain
data (either quantitative or qualitative) and
report research results.
Background: Should describe the context and importance
of the study and state the objective(s)
of the study.
Methods: Should include a description of the methods
used considering study design, setting,
population, measures, and analytic procedures.
Results: Should describe the results in sufficient detail
to support the conclusions.
Conclusions: Should state the implications of the findings
for clinical practice, research, education,
or policy.
• Workshop: The most effective workshops provide
participants with the chance to practice
a skill which they can introduce into their teaching,
practice or community activity.
Learning Objective(s): State the objective of the workshop.
A learning objective clearly states
what someone will learn or is able to do as a result
of listening to the presentation. Objectives are
action-oriented and should begin with words such as describe,
evaluate, recognize or assess. Do
not use terms like "understand" or "know
how to."
Brief Summary of Workshop: Workshop description.
Contents and Methods: Describe the means by which the
identified objectives will be accomplished.
List the methods, strategies, materials and resources
to be used by the workshop facilitator.
Additional Presenters: List names, degree, and institutional
affiliation for any additional presenters
who will be involved in the workshop.
• Submissions must be received via email to Isabel@aaap.org
or submitted online no later
than June 1, 2007.
• During the review process, the review committee
will determine whether submitted abstracts
will be presented in the oral or the poster presentation
format. Authors should indicate their
presentation preference on the abstract submission form.
• No paper may be presented if it has been published
or accepted for publication either in
article or abstract form prior to the abstract submission
deadline. Papers under review
at the time of the submission deadline but not yet accepted
for publication, even if
appearing before the meeting, are eligible for presentation.
• All presenters must be registered for the conference
and pay the full registration fee.
AAAP offers a limited amount of travel scholarships for
residents and medical students.
These scholarships are a separate application process
and are not affiliated with abstract
submissions. For more information, visit www.aaap.org/meetings/2007am/
2007scholarships.html.
• Presenters may not use any conference presentation
to market products or services.
• Acceptance letters will be mailed or e-mailed
by August 1, 2007.
• Accepted abstracts will be printed in the Final
Conference Program.
• Presenters will be required to sign a disclosure
form acknowledging potential conflicts of
interests.
