Recognize emerging issues and trends in Addiction Psychiatry and be on the forefront of diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders (SUD) and co-occurring mental disorders

Participants should be able to:

  • Maintain expertize in recognizing, diagnosing, and treating SUD as they change in society.
  • Increase competency in using evidence based psychotherapies, medications, and other treatments and interventions.
  • Improve knowledge using didactic presentations, skill building workshops, and unique educational formats to support complex concepts in Addiction Psychiatry.
  • Increase expertize in recognizing and managing co-occurring psychiatry and non-psychiatric disorders and the effect they have on each other.
  • Increase teaching skills to spread SUD knowledge among peers, colleagues, trainees, patients and the community about Addiction Psychiatry.

Provide support and education to clinicians treating patients with substance use disorders

Participants should be able to:

  • Utilize and promote evidence-based approaches and current treatment guidelines. for biopsychosocial interventions to treat SUD and co-occurring mental disorders.
  • Network with peers and mentors to find support and guidance in the field.
  • Develop and expand current educational curriculum in addictions.

Demonstrate for trainees the various evidence-based approaches, treatments, and settings applicable to the field (or practice) of addiction psychiatry.

Trainees should be able to:

  • Identify various career paths in Addiction Psychiatry..
  • Increase their familiarity with career options and pathways by networking with leaders in the field.
  • Enhance their knowledge relevant to early careers in Addiction Psychiatry.

The Scientific Program Committee (SPC) strives to continue to meet these established educational goals:

  • Sustaining attendees evaluations and feedback describing AAAP’s annual meeting as outstanding and worth attending.
  • Maintaining a high quality content that is evidence-based and clinically useful for attendees.
  • Continuing the efforts to find the balance between providing information/content and providing significant time for peer interaction – providing activities at different times so that attendees find meaningful activities at any time during the meeting.
