When mental illness or substance use causes significant impairments in functioning and individuals experience serious mental illness (SMI)—including bipolar disorder, significant depression, or schizophrenia—or children experience serious emotional disturbances (SEDs), the challenges and level of strain can be insurmountable.

More papers from this series will be released on an ongoing basis.
