Presenters
Dr. Blazes is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at OHSU. He is triple board-certified in psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, and emergency medicine and is the director of the OHSU addiction psychiatry Fellowship. Dr Blazes is a clinician educator whose practice is based out of the Portland VA Medical Center. He lectures widely and publishes on such topics as benzodiazepines, buprenorphine, and the neurobiology of addiction and recovery. He also created the AAAP Advanced Addiction Psychotherapy Curriculum which offers monthly live seminars as well as archived content on multiple psychotherapeutic modalities.
Kenneth M. Carpenter, PhD is a clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience developing, implementing, and evaluating evidence-based strategies for helping individuals make essential lifestyle changes. He has received federal and private foundation grant money for investigating the psychological, behavioral, and neurobiological factors associated with substance use and its treatment. He holds an academic appointment in Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry and is a Research Scientist in the Division on Substance Use Disorders at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. For the past 13 years, he and his colleagues at CMC:Foundation for Change have been providing community-based training for families and professionals in the use of unilateral helping models to cultivate interpersonal contexts that invite and support change.
Brian Hurley, MD, MBA, DFASAM, FAPA is an addiction physician and the Medical Director of the Bureau of Substance Abuse Prevention and Control in the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health and a volunteer assistant clinical professor of addiction medicine in the UCLA Department of Family Medicine. He is the Immediate Past President of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. He is a Primary Investigator for the Centers for Disease Control Overdose to Action:LOCAL award to Los Angeles County. He is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers.
Dr. King is a licensed psychologist with a Doctorate in Clinical and School Psychology from the Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology at Yeshiva University. Dr. King hosted the Beyond Addiction Show, a weekly podcast dedicated to disseminating information about evidence-based treatments and interviewing people who have worked to move the conversation about substance use forward. Dr. King currently oversees the Day Program, CMC’s intensive outpatient treatment program. He is an Invitation to Change Trainer and has trained throughout the United States and in Uganda. He is a specialist in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Treatment for Insomnia (CBT-I) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). He co-authored a chapter in Different Patients, Different Therapies (Cabaniss & Holoshitz, 2019) on using ACT to work with substance use disorders.
